The wine cooler is made of porous ceramics. The cooler acts like a spunge when held under a tap. The water evaporates on the outside, thus cooling the inside. An old principle that was used in the past with butter dishes. The cooler is placed over the bottle, closing off the bottle. Increased heat on the outside causes more evaporation, thus cooling the bottle more.
