Design Process
A segment from an interview with Floor van Essen - Bno
In recent years, Arian Brekveld has mainly focused on designing furniture. His passion and involvement are evident, as reflected in the numerous spatial models he creates during the design process. "I come up with good ideas more quickly when I am building. Additionally, I can assess forms and proportions much better. The world on your computer screen is different from reality. I often bring a life-sized model home. Suddenly, there's a cut-and-paste chair at our kitchen table, and I have to warn the children not to sit on it! When such a model is at home in the right context, you can gaze at it leisurely and dream about how the design can be improved. I am a making designer, and I always have been." Meanwhile, Arian Brekveld has shown a rotating 3D model of the new chair on his smartphone and has also revealed three successive models from under white covers. You can see the hand of the making designer and the development that the chair design has gone through in the details. Carefully stored in a large wooden crate, there are even more models, but smaller ones. They are perfectly made miniature chairs, with even more detailed work than the models stitched or glued together with wood, wool, and fabric scraps. The flexibility of the models is important, as they can be easily bent or trimmed.
"I always notice that clients prefer looking at models because they ignite the imagination much more than design drawings. It also often leads to better feedback. Designing is a fantastic process that has no fixed formula. A concept evolves through doing, and many things change during the making process. If I struggle to create something in a scale model, I know it will certainly be challenging in the final production process, so I address it during the design phase. However, you need to be aware of your own limitations. It shouldn't be the case that you adjust the design to compensate for your own lack of skill. Making design should not become a limitation. By the way, I don't see myself as a kind of craftsman. Of course, I also make extensive use of computers, but at the right time, which is rarely at the beginning of the process. The timing of the different stages is crucial in the process."
