We see the functional aspects, like a high back that provides enough comfort, a solid upholstery, flat and sturdy arm rests with enough room for a laptop computer. In addition, an outspoken form exploration has taken place, reminding us that a sitting object claims its own spatiality because it has a front, sides and back. The designer can use these facets to his advantage, which is why Brekveld decided to give the sides their own distinctively different character, in terms of color, material and shape. The details express an explicit opinion. Seams and stitching encapsulate and as it were zoom in on the shape. They emphasize the lines that make this sofa so distinct and unique. Next, the choice of materials. In all their gentleness, the colors and fabrics reflect the designer’s own character; gentle but determined. Both the knitted and woven materials are in alignment, but suddenly provide a marked contrast through the use of color. The design process is visible and reflects a pleasant yet challenging dialogue between fellow professionals, the conversation between the designer, the manufacturer and the craftsmen who helped bring the design to life.
